Fabric performance comparison
Performance comparison case A
(Show Details...)

All highly similar fabrics from Client A

Fabric samples specs:

  • Sample-3 cotton/Lycra(R) core spun yarn, fabric made in Swiss.
  • Sample-1 cotton/Lycra(R) core spun yarn, fabric made in German.
  • Sample-5 T400, fabric made in USA.
  • Sample-2 T400 (2GT/3GT bicomponent filament), made in Taiwan.

From the client, Sample-3 was considered most preferred one, by testing and calculating the Relative Hand Values (RHV) in the table, the four fabrics are easily ranked in terms of performance, and the specific differences between the fabrics shown in the Fingerprint diagram.

Performance comparison case B
(Show Details...)

The same type of medium fabrics for women's pants from Client B, and a silk fabric was set as user's reference

  • Silk - 100% silk
  • Gap - 100% cotton, twill
  • J. Crew - 100% cotton, twill
  • A&F - 100% cotton, twill

In the fingerprint, symbols and corresponding fabric 8 attributes: Stiffness, Smoothness, Softness, V4, V5, V6, V7, V8

Based on the Softness values in table, the four fabrics ranked as Silk softer > Gap > A&F > J. Crew

Yet overall ranking in Relative Hand Value (RHV) reference to user preferred sample (a silk fabric): Gap better > J. Crew > A&F

Sensitivity demonstration
(Show Details...)

From Client C, a group of 13 cotton fabrics mixed with (A)/without (B) softener treatment. WR-13 is the control and expected to have the worst hand rating.

In calculating the RHV data for all 13 samples, WR-13 is chosen as the user’s reference hence RHV=0.0.The PhabrOmeter® RHV data clearly differentiate the two groups, and their rankings.

PhabrOmeter® Technologies

Human sensory evaluation by definition should be the ultimate judge for hand evaluation. However the following problems render it highly limited for industrial use.

  • human subjectivity;
  • culture, market, product variations
  • fatigue and sense shifting
  • communication of the descriptors
  • training panelists

For instrument to replace human sensory evaluations, sensory evaluation has to be used as the validation, especially in establishing standard on instrumental approach.

Applications With PhabrOmeter®
  • Performance validation of new products - by finger printing and comparing the new and old products

  • Quality control - by finger printing and then comparing with the standard product

  • Imitating a given product - by finger printing and comparing with the given sample
